Lights: Matt Brabham returns to Andretti Autosport

Matt Brabham has rejoined the Andretti Autosport Indy Lights team for a second season after finishing fourth in drivers' standings last year
Matt Brabham is set to return to the Indy Lights series with Andretti Autosport and believes the season ahead is a 'brilliant opportunity'.

The grandson of three-times Formula 1 champion Sir Jack Brabham finished fourth in Indy Lights last year with Andretti, notching up a maiden victory in Indianapolis along with three further podiums.

The 2015 season begins in St Petersburg in Florida on the 27-29th March and the 2013 Pro Mazda champion says it has been a testing off-season but he is ready to go racing.

“It's brilliant that we have the opportunity to link up with Andretti Autosport again for this campaign,” said Brabham. “It has been a tough off-season trying to piece everything together, but thanks to the team and some close supporters, we'll be at St Petersburg.

“Having won both races at St. Pete in Pro Mazda and being quite strong there last year, I'm confident of hitting the ground running. It's a great track and I love street courses, so we'll be aiming to be in the mix.”

Alongside his Indy Lights commitments the 21-year-old has also been competing in the inaugural Formula E season as Andretti's reserve driver, racing in two rounds at Putrajaya and Punta del Este. Brabham is hopeful the experience he picked up from Formula E has put him in a positive position for Indy Lights.

“It is a brand new car this year so there is a bit to learn, but the experience from developing the Formula E car with Andretti will work in my favour,” he said. “Like the Indy Lights car, it was a totally new package and those FE street courses are some of the tightest I've ever raced on.”

Andretti has been getting to grips with the all-new aerodynamic packages ahead of the new season and Brabham admits he has lost some ground on his rivals after missing some of the test sessions.

“In terms of Indy Lights testing, I'm a bit behind the eight ball, but through FE and training regularly, I'm going in race fit. Andretti Autosport are the best team in the pitlane, so I have no doubt the knowledge they've obtained from Shelby Blackstock [Brabham's team-mate] will help me.”

Michael Andretti, CEO of Andretti Autosport is delighted to welcome back Brabham to his Indy Lights team.

“It's great to have Matt back in a seat within our Indy Lights program,” Andretti said. “He's done a stellar job stepping up for us in our Formula E team as reserve driver, but it will be great to see him back in Indy Lights alongside Shelby Blackstock.”
