Lucas Filippi has joined Dale Coyne Racing for the 2016 IndyCar opener at St Petersburg this weekend alongside Conor Daly.
The former GP2 challenger and Honda F1 test driver enjoyed a sporadic 2015 campaign in the United States series with CFH Racing taking a best result of second place in Toronto.
The 30-year-old Italian is eager to secure a full-time IndyCar drive after three years on the peripheries, while Coyne Racing is aiming to run two cars for the full 2016 campaign, plus an additional two at the Indianapolis 500.
It is believed if the Italian impresses at St Petersburg he could be handed the drive for the remainder of the season.
"I feel very positive going to St Petersburg," Filippi said. “Honda have done a good job in providing us with an improved aero kit and more power. I think it will be very competitive between all the teams.
"I see that Dale Coyne Racing is really motivated to boost the level of the team even more this year, and I think that with myself and Conor we have a good combination and I think we could really get strong results."
