IndyCar Alabama: Pagenaud pips Power to Barber pole

Simon Pagenaud puts himself in prime position to extend his IndyCar Series lead with pole at Barber Motorsports Park.
IndyCar points' leader Simon Pagenaud will start from pole position for the fourth round of the 2016 season at Barber Motorsports Park after prevailing in the series' revised qualifying session.

The Frenchman, a winner last time out in Long Beach, produced a new lap record of 1min 06.7262s around the Alabama venue in a final shootout session reduced from ten to six minutes to spice up the action, heading out Penske team-mate Will Power in the process.

The Australian was just two tenths adrift of Pagenaud and just a tenth clear of third place man Josef Newgarden in the Ed Carpenter Racing car, while Scott Dixon, Sebastien Bourdais and Graham Rahal ensured an all-Chevrolet engine top six.

Missing out on the top six shootout by a small margin, Helio Castroneves will get away from the fourth row in seventh, alongside James Hinchcliffe and ahead of Tony Kanaan, Charlie Kimball and Max Chilton, the Briton proving the top rookie in 11th from Luca Filippi.

After podiums in each of the opening three races, Pagenaud comes into the race with a 14 points lead over Dixon.
