Briton Dan Wheldon couldn't mask his disappointment at just missing out on another IRL IndyCar Series victory on Sunday at the Kansas Speedway even though he admitted that Sam Hornish Jr had the better car.

Defending IRL Champion Wheldon, who in true John Watson style has vowed not to shave until his next series victory will have to continue with the stubbly look for at least another fortnight after Hornish Jr edged him out of the winner's enclosure by a scant 0.07-seconds in Sunday's Kansas Lottery Indy 300.

Despite winning the pole on Saturday Wheldon didn't have an answer for the Marlboro Team Penske driver in race conditions and although the Englishman managed to get his nose ahead on several occasions during the final couple of laps around the 1.5-mile Kansas oval, Hornish's low line would prove to be the deciding factor.

"I'm just disappointed to come up short again," said Wheldon who scored his fifth top five finish of the season. "We gave everything we had. I tried pinning him down a couple of times. Obviously, I've got to respect the fact he needs racing room and his car was pushing a little bit. It got to the point where he was just quicker. He just blew right by me on the backstretch on that final lap. Mechanically his car was working a little better. So it was second for us. To be fair, he deserved to win. He drove hard. We just need to keep working harder and try to win."

Wheldon now lies 43 points behind new series leader Hornish Jr in the title picture in fourth place overall with six rounds remaining this year.
