IRL IndyCar Series stalwarts Dreyer & Reinbold Racing look like missing the next round of the series after admitting that they only had the budget to do one of the remaining four races.
Team co-owner Dennis Reinbold conceded at Milwaukee that the #5 Dallara-Honda would not be present at the two-mile Michigan International Speedway next weekend after talks with Sarah Fisher about a return to the team she raced for in 2002 and 2003 stalled.
Australian driver Ryan Briscoe only has the budget to do the penultimate round of the championship at the Infineon Raceway road course and with original D&R driver Buddy Lazier already having been shown the door due to a lack of funding, just 17 cars look like lining up for the Michigan race.
“Last week, I would have told you that we would have a pretty good chance at getting something together,” said Reinbold of the talks with Fisher. “As of now, it doesn't look very positive. Our whole contingency on that was that we needed to put a budget together for the three races that we have remaining that Ryan [Briscoe] isn't going to drive for us. We had talked to Sarah (Fisher) about that possibility and things gained some momentum and that momentum pretty much went away.
After a tough weekend in Milwaukee that saw Briscoe complete just 13 laps of the ABC Supply Co/AJ Foyt 225 before retiring the #5 with incurable handling difficulties, Reinbold confirmed that their current deal with the former Toyota F1 test driver would not extend beyond the Infineon road race
“He will not be in the car at Michigan,” stated Reinbold. “The programme with him was for here, last weekend, and also at Sonoma. So beyond this weekend and Sonoma, I really don't know what we are going to do in the future.”
