Wheldon takes joyless Homestead win.

There was little to celebrate as Dan Wheldon picked up where he left off in 2005 by taking a typically close victory in the season opening Toyota Indy 300 at the Homestead-Miami Speedway.

The Englishman overtook Helio Castroneves on the outside of the final corner to claim the win by just one tenth of a second, although all thoughts were with the family of Rahal-Letterman driver Paul Dana, who lost his life in a practice accident earlier in the day.

Behind the top two, Sam Hornish Jr, Dario Franchitti and Scott Dixon were the only other lead lap finishers in a race that saw just ten cars finish.

Kosuke Matsuura, Scott Sharp, Felipe Giaffone, Tomas Scheckter and Eddie Cheever were the only other drivers to complete the race as just 16 cars took the start following the withdrawal of Rahal-Letterman's three cars and that of Ed Carpenter, who was also involved in Dana's fatal crash.
