Barber Motorsports Park - Testing - Mar 14

Will Power stamped his authority on IndyCar's official public pre-season test session ahead of the 2011 season, topping both morning and afternoon sessions on the first day.
Will Power was the man to beat on street and road courses in 2010, and he showed that he intends that run of form to continue into 2011 with top times in both test sessions of the first of two days of official public pre-season testing at Barber Motorsports Park.

James Hinchcliffe - testing again with Newman/Haas in pursuit of one of the new remaining seats on the IndyCar grid - made a big impression with second fastest time in the morning (fifth fastest overall), which may be enough to secure the Canadian a spot with the team in 2011.

By contrast, former Champ Car champion and F1 driver Sebastian Bourdais could only manage 15th fastest time in the morning as he ponders whether to take up a deal with Dale Coyne Racing to run a street course-only campaign in the new season.

Team new boy Mike Conway was the surprising fastest driver in the Andretti Autosports line-up as he returns to the series following his serious accident at last year's Indianapolis 500; his compatriot James Jakes also made a surprise debut IndyCar appearance with Dale Coyne Racing, having passed his driver physical only 90 minutes before the scheduled start of the test session. Jakes, who has been racing in GP3 and GP2 Asia, was near the bottom of the timesheets for his runs.

Sebastian Saavedra ran for Conquest Racing, having earlier announced that he has signed with the team for a full season after his initial appearance with them in the final 2010 race at Homestead. The team is still trying to decide who will get the other seat with the team, with a choice between Pippa Mann, Jean-Karl Vernay and veteran Paul Tracy.

Testing continues tomorrow.
