St Petersburg - Practice times

Will Power and Dario Franchitti topped the timesheets in the Friday practice sessions for the IndyCar season opener on the streets of St Petersburg, Florida.
Penske's Will Power picked up where he left off at the end of 2010 by being the man to beat on road/street courses. But it was good news for reigning IndyCar champion Dario Franchitti, who - after a frustrating and disappointing display of form at last week's pre-season tests at Barber Motor Speedway - was well and truly back on the pace as well.

Ryan Hunter-Reay was fastest in St Petersburg in the morning but damaged his suspension with a minor hit against the barriers and had limited running in the afternoon. EJ Viso had an eventful day for KV Racing Technology, causing the morning's only caution with a crash in turn 3 toward the end of the session and then spinning into the barriers in the afternoon.

Mike Conway had a particularly strong return after ten months off racing after being injured at last year's Indy 500, finishing third in the combined practice times. Overall the field was very tightly packed, with 16 cars within 1s of Power's top time on the 1.8-mile, 14-turn converted road track representing five different teams within the top ten.

There is another hour-long practice session on Saturday morning, followed by qualifying which will be run as two groups - Group A and Group B - in 15 minute sessions with the top 12 at the end of this (the top six from each group) advancing to the second round. Finally, the top six advance on to the ten minute Firestone Fast Six shootout which decides the front three rows for Sunday's race.
