Alabama - Practice 1 & 2 times
8 April 2011
There was no stopping Penske's Will Power at Barber Motorsports Park, as he laid down unbeatable times in both the morning and afternoon practice sessions ahead of Sunday's Indy Grand Prix of Alabama.
His margin over Dario Franchitto was 0.65s in the morning, while Franchitti's team mate Scott Dixon pushed Power closer in the afternoon and reduced the gap to under 0.2s. Franchitti dropped back to fourth, meaning that the Penske and Ganassi cars were perfectly mingled in the top five positions in the afternoon.
The margin in the morning was partly down to good timing - Power ran just five laps before it started to rain in the final 15 minutes of the session, which enabled him to set a benchmark time that others couldn't top once the track got damp.
There were drier conditions once again in the afternoon session, which saw a number of incidents including a spectacular spin for Ryan Briscoe that he managed to escape without hitting anything; and a heavy crash for EJ Viso (of course) 15 minutes before the end.
The sessions also saw the appearances of James Hinchcliffe newly signed at Newman/Haas alongside Oriol Servia, and Simon Pagenaud subbing for the injured Ana Beatriz (who watched on from pit lane) in the Dreyer & Reinbold. The team's other driver, Justin Wilson, was able to take part in both sessions despite sporting a brace on his left hand because of wrist injuries sustained at St petersburg in a collision with Danica Patrick.
"My injury is not as bad as breaking a scaphoid, which is what Bia has done," Wilson said. "I've done that and that hurts. This, so far ... I haven't taken a single pain killer. It's not as painful unless you irritate it, knock it. I had a carbon brace made to try to support it, stop me from flexing my wrist." However, Barber is a tough, physical track and Wilson admitted "It's going to be hard work ... You have to shuffle your hands to get through the hairpin. With no thumb, I have to get that timing just right. That's going to be tricky."
Qualifying takes place on Saturday. Once again, the format will be in three parts gradually eliminating drivers until the Firestone Fast Six shootout decides the top half dozen positions.
