Long Beach - Sunday warm-up

15 April 2012

Ryan Hunter-Reay led the times after the final track opportunity for drivers ahead of Sunday afternoon's Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, his lap of 1:09.4724s nearly a second faster than Scott Dixon and Rubens Barrichello in a session that took its cue from Saturday's stop-start practice session.

The Sunday morning warm-up ended up with four red flags in the course of just half an hour for a series of minor on-track incidents. The first came just minutes after the green flag, when Josef Newgarden went in too hot and had to take to the run-off at turn 6 where he stalled the car. The session had barely restarted when Takuma Sato overcooked it into turn 8 and took light contact on the tyre wall to bring out the second red flag.

The session dodged another red flag for a harmless run-off by Simon Pagenaud, only to get promptly halted again by Katherine Legge getting into the air over the turn 5 rumble strips and into the tyre wall with 11 minutes to go.

The session resumed and was unaffected by a run-off for Oriol Servia at turn 8,
but then Dario Franchitti promptly also hit problems at turn 5 and went into the tyre wall to bring out the final red flag and a premature chequered flag. The #10 received some light damage from the impact and will need to be checked over ahead of the race, in which Franchitti starts from the front alongside Newgarden after all the slew of engine change grid penalties are applied.
