Long Beach - Race result

15 April 2012

Penske's Will Power followed up his victory in Alabama with a second win of the 2012 IZOD IndyCar Series season, on the streets of Long Beach in California.

Power qualified in second place but was demoted to 12th on the grid as part of a mass penalty inflicted on all Chevrolet cars for a decision by the manufacturer to change every engine currently in use. That led to a jumbled grid with cars of very mixed abilities fighting side-by-side, but Will Power kept away from the inevitable incidents and put himself in with a fighting chance of victory by sticking strictly to a two-stop fuel strategy.

Power's main threat in the closing lap came from Schmidt/Hamilton Motorsports' Simon Pagenaud, who went for a three-stop strategy allowing him to turn up the fuel in the closing laps and hunt Power down, closing by over a second per lap but finally running out of time to strike for the lead when the white flag came out and slower traffic also became an issue.

Polesitter Dario Franchitti was involved in a first lap incident that put Josef Newgarden out, while Marco Andretti exited the race on lap 22 when contact with Graham Rahal briefly launched him into the air. Takuma Sato was denied a top three finish when he was spun on the penultimate lap by Ryan Hunter-Reay, and Rubens Barrichello was spun at the hairpin by Helio Castroneves on the final lap which also ended up involving James Jakes and Oriol Servia to completely block the track. Hunter-Reay and Castroneves both received 30-second post-race penalties for causing their respective accidents.

A full race report is now available.
