Indy 500: Pole Day warm-up times

Penske's Helio Castroneves showed that he was taking the Saturday morning pre-qualification warm-up practice seriously, going top by setting the fatest time of the week so far.
Helio Castroneves pushed the Penske #3 car to new heights in the short Saturday morning warm-up practice session ahead of today's qualification for the 2012 Indianapolis 500 race.

Castroneves recorded a best lap of 227.555mph (39.5181s) - the fastest lap so far at Indianapolis Motor Speedway this year - in the first half hour of running allowed to him from 8am.

Castroneves has already started the Indy 500 from pole on four occasions; a fifth would put him one behind four-time Indy 500 winner Rick Mears, who is a Team Penske advisor this year at IMS. Pole position comes with a $100,000 bonus cheque.

Ana Beatrix was second fastest, 0.272s off Helio's blistering best time with a lap speed of 226.187mph, while Castroneves' team mate Ryan Briscoe was the only other driver to do over 226mph in the session (226.027mph, 39.8183s).

In total, 12 of the 30 drivers were under the 40s mark for their Pole Day warm-up runs, in an two-hour-long period of track activity in which the cars were initially split into two groups for 30 minutes of running apiece before having a further hour of track time for all cars to take advantage of.

Qualifying starts at 11am local time (4pm BST) with Tony Kanaan out first. See qualifying order.
