Baltimore: Qualifying times

1 September 2012

Penske's Will Power claimed pole position for the Grand Prix of Baltimore after coming out top in all the rounds of qualifying on Saturday afternoon. He'll be joined on the front row by one of his chief title rivals - Scott Dixon, making his 200th IZOD IndyCar Series start this weekend - while Sebastien Bourdais gets a row two start for the second week in succession alongside Dario Franchitti.

The session followed the standard road and street course format, beginning with round 1 which saw half the field running in the first 15-minute Group 1 and the other half in Group 2.

Tony Kanaan topped the first group with a time of 1:20.1257s (91.656mph) just over two tenths ahead of Scott Dixon. Bruno Junqueira got off to a successful start subbing for the injured Josef Newgarden by taking third place, and Ed Carpenter, Mike Conway and Charlie Kimball also made it through, leaving top names Ryan Hunter-Reay, Alex Tagliani and Rubens Barrichello out in the cold. They'd been caught out by the early end to the session that followed a red flag for Graham Rahal hitting the wall while navigating the new chicane; Rahal's car sustained heavy damage, while being the cause of the red flag meant his fast time up to that point was deleted.

In the second group, Penske's Will Power was the more expected name atop the timesheets with a lap of 1:18.6736s (93.347mph) pipping Sebastien Bourdais by 0.0430s. Dario Franchitti, Justin Wilson, James Hinccliffe and Simon Pagenaud also made it through, but Power's team mates Ryan Briscoe and Helio Castroneves were surprise fallers. JR Hiledbrand was unable to participate because of damage from his own incident with the chicane wall in Saturday morning Practice 3.

After a five minute pause, the top six from each group progressed to the ten-minute Top 12 round 2, which was topped by Will Power looking in imperious form with a lap of 1:17.5921s (94.648mph), eight tenths faster than Scott Dixon in second place. Sebastien Bourdais, James Hinchcliffe, Mike Conway and Dario Franchitti also progressed. Simon Pagenaud failed to get out and set a time because of suspension damage sustained in round 1 hitting the wall around the chicane, and Justin Wilson lost his fastest lap because he brought out the red flag in the session in a similar incident.

The top six from round 2 then went through to the pole shootout Firestone Fast Six round 3 which set the front three rows of the grid for Sunday's race. Will Power completed his clean sweep of qualifying sessions and claimed pole with a lap of 1:17.9750s (94.184mph), but Mike Conway was the surprise of the session by claiming second place half a second off Power's pace, although he ended the session with front-end damage after contact with the wall at the chicane and will also have a ten place grid drop for an engine change. That will boost Scott Dixon up from third place, while Sebastien Bourdais did enough enough to ensure his second consecutive row two start in a week alongside Dario Franchitti.
