IndyCar Long Beach 2013: Practice 1 times
19 April 2013
Andretti Autosport's James Hinchcliffe set the pace at the end of the first practice session for this year's Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, the third race of the 2013 IZOD IndyCar Series season.
Hinchcliffe - who won the first race of the season at St Petersburg in March - set a time of 1:09.8157s (101.479mph) at the end of the 45 minute morning session on the 1.968-mile, 11-turn street course.
His time was just 0.0133s ahead of Mike Conway, the 2011 Long Beach winner who is making a one-off return to the series with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing this weekend. Conway effectively stepped away from the series at the end of last year after calling time on running in any further oval races.
The session came to a slightly premature end when first Scott Dixon's Ganassi ran off at turn 6 and then Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing's Josef Newgarden ended up stranded at turn 9, prompting officials to throw a red-and-chequered flag a couple of minutes early. Neither Dixon nor Newgarden sustained any damage in their incidents and both returned to pit lane under their own power.
Earlier, IndyCar announced that drivers who run more than five laps in Practice 1 will get an extra set of tyres to use in the session, in an effort to encourage teas to spend more time out on the circuit during race weekends. The initiative - which only applies to rookies and those outside the top ten the championship standings - is effective from this weekend.
A second 45-minute session follows later in the day, with Practice 3 on Saturday morning ahead of qualifying in the afternoon. A half hour Sunday morning warm-up is the last track activity for the IndyCar drivers before the race which starts at 1.45pm California time, 9.45pm BST.
