IndyCar Sao Paulo 2013: Practice 1 times

4 May 2013

Penske's Will Power set the pace in the first practice session on the 11-turn 2.536-mile temporary street circuit in the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo with a lap of 1:21.8517s (111.538mph) late in the 75-minute session. His time was 0.0459s ahead of Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing's Josef Newgarden, with Dragon Racing's Sebastien Bourdais another 15 hundredths of a second further back in third.

Power's time is still some way off his track record of 1:21.2718s set here last year, but that benchmark is expected to fall after organisers made changes to the track layout for 2013, removing kerbing in turns 1 and 2 to make the corners wider and faster in order to promote overtaking during the race.

It had proved a generally quiet early morning session, the first half hour of which was reserved for rookies and those outside the top ten in points, the only noteworthy incident being Helio Castroneves running off at turn 11 with 20 minutes to go. However the session ended under a red flag after Simon Pagenaud clipped the wall on the exit of turn 2, causing noteworthy damage to the #77 Schmidt-Hamilton car.

Despite injuring his right hand in a late accident at Long Beach, Tony Kanaan participated in practice after being medically cleared for competition by Dr Michael Olinger. However, the local hero was seen nursing the hand with an ice pack after practice concluded and was evidently in some measure of discomfort.
