IndyCar Sao Paulo 2013: Qualifying times

Ryan Hunter-Reay will start from pole position for Sunday afternoon's Itaipava Sao Paulo Indy 300 race, with his Andretti team mate EJ Viso alongside him on the front row.
It will be an all-Andretti Autosport front row for the start of Sunday's IZOD IndyCar Series race in Sao Paulo, Brazil, with Ryan Hunter-Reay taking point ahead of EJ Viso after a catastrophically-timed Round 1 red flag wrecked the pole hopes of pre-qualifying favourite Will Power and left the Australian facing an 11th row start.

Qualifying took the usual format for road and street course races in the IZOD IndyCar Series, with the field split into two groups for Round 1. The top six from each group combined to run in Round 2, and the fastest half dozen cars in that round went on to compete for pole position in the Firestone Fast Six.

In Group 1, EJ Viso set a new track record with a time of 1:20.7911s (just over 113mph) on the 11-turn 2.536-mile temporary street circuit putting him 0.0245s ahead of Dario Franchitti. Tony Kanaan, Marco Andretti, Takuma Sato and Scott Dixon also progressed to Round 2; Oriol Servià was the fastest of those drivers to miss out. The session ended under red after Tristan Vautier made contact with the tyre wall at turn 2, which meant that the Frenchman had his two fastest lap times deleted as a penalty. Also missing out was Josef Newgarden, as the Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing crew were busy changing out the car's Honda engine.

Repairs to the tyre wall delayed Group 2 getting underway, and then the team splayed their usual waiting game intending to leave their flying laps until toward the end of the ten minute session. However, a red flag caused by James Jakes stopping in turn 7 caught everyone out, especially those who hadn't put in a banker lap in the first half of the session - such as Will Power, who ended up touring back to pit lane well out of the running. Simona de Silvestro was credited with the fastest time, with James Hinchcliffe, JR Hildebrand, Justin Wilson, Sebastien Bourdais and Ryan Hunter-Reay also squeezing through to the next round.

Despite the lessons learned in the opening round, most cars still held back in the Top 12 session and didn't show themselves out on track until past the halfway point. Fortunately this time there were no stoppages and everyone was able to set their planned flying laps, with Tony Kanaan pushing the lap record time down further to 1:20.4953s in the process. After race control decided to take no action over an on-track incident between Viso and de Silvestro, also progressing through to the Firestone Fast Six pole shootout were Hinchcliffe, Viso, Franchitti, Hunter-Reay and Dixon with Bourdais missing out by two hundredths of a second.

In the final ten-minute part of qualifying, once again almost half the running time went unused by the teams. Ryan Hunter-Reay usurped Dario Franchitti's first lap off the top spot, his own initial effort of 1:20.8811s some four tenths faster than the Scot. When Franchitti closed the gap up, the reigning series champion pushed the benchmark down to 1:20.5471s. When his team mate EJ Viso picked up the challenge and leapt into second place, Hunter-Reay went all-out in his final run and lowered the new track record still further to 1:20.4312s to maintain a three tenths margin over the Venezuelan, the two of them clinching an all-Andretti Autosport front row in the process for the Itaipava Sao Paulo Indy 300.

Sunday's race starts at 11.30am EST (16.30pm BST) and is preceded by a short 30-minute warm-up session in the morning at 7am (Noon BST).
