2013 Indy 500: Practice 3 times

Marco Andretti and Helio Castroneves became the first drivers to break through the 225mph limit on the third day of practice at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
A new milestone was reached on Monday, the third day of practice for the 97th running of the Indianapolis 500, as Marco Andretti and Helio Castroneves both managed to top 225mph in the tow of other cars on the 2.5-mile speedway.

Andretti led the way with a best lap of 225.100mph (39.9823s) for Andretti Autosport, while Penske's Helio Castroneves - a three-time winner of the Indy 500 - was just 0.0043s back. Their respective team mates Ryan Hunter-Reay and Will Power were next fastest and within a quarter of a second of Marco's benchmark, and Panther's JR Hildebrand rounded out an all-Chevrolet top five. Takuma Sato was the fatest Honda runner of the day.

In total, the six-hour session saw 32 driver/car combinations at work on the busiest day so far at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, with Simona de Silvestro among those joining the action now that the weather had warmed up after a fresh and breezy weekend which made track conditions less than ideal. There were no significant unscheduled interruptions to track availability, just two yellows for debris and one for a track inspection all of which lasted less than ten minutes.

Before the main practice session, a one-hour period saw Conor Daly take to the track for the first time in the #41 AJ Foyt Racing car, after he arrived fresh from his weekend duties in Spain in the GP3 Series. Daly quickly got to work and completed his mandatory Rookie Orientation Program which means he can now take part in regular practice sessions and in Saturday's qualifying session.

"That's what living the dream feels like. It was really cool," said Daly, who hails from the state of Indiana. "I haven't been on an oval in three years. The first run was kind of difficult to get familiar with it because the car turns in really, really well. Once I got rid of that first run, we were able to get on it."

Pippa Mann also completed a refresher program during this one-hour prelude, as she hasn't been in an IndyCar since her last race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in 2011.
