2013 Indy 500: Practice 5 times

Dario Franchitti finally brought an end to the run of Chevrolet-powered cars at the top of this week's daily practice sessions ahead of the 2013 Indianapolis 500.
Dario Franchitti went to the top of the timesheets on Wednesday, the fifth day of practice for the 97th running of the Indianapolis 500, putting in a time of 40.1363s (224.236mph) which was just under a tenth faster than Townsend Bell who was second fastest for the day.

Franchitti's time capped the first day of 2013 Indy 500 practice so far in which a Chevrolet-powered car has not topped the timesheets. Ed Carpenter headed the first day of practice on Saturday, while it's been an unbroken Andretti Autosports roll call in the intervening days until now. As well as setting the overall fastest time of the day with 27 minutes remaining of the six-hour track session, Franchitti also set the best non-tow time of the day with a speed of 218.789mph.

"It doesn't really count for much, but it's nice nonetheless," said the three-time Indy 500 champion, adding that the Ganassi team had been unhappy with their early runs and made setup changes before hitting their stride later in the afternoon. "We ran some and I was pretty happy with it, so we went out there with some of the Andretti guys and my teammates," he said, referring to Scott Dixon, Charlie Kimball and Ryan Briscoe.

"Really the lap time came from being in the right place at the right time," he admitted. "It was when you got the tow and how big the tow was, so for us it was more important that the car was balanced and how the car is in traffic and stuff, and we're getting there. Still got a little work to do, but we're closer than we have been."

Times as a whole were slightly down on Wednesday, which saw temperatures reach 88F during the day, and so Franchitti's time was actually the fourth fastest of all the practice days so far; only two drivers (Marco Andretti and Helio Castroneves) have so far broken the 225mph/40s marks and both of them achieved this on Monday.

Practice time was paused for five track inspections during the day, plus a yellow for debris after Sebastian Saavedra shed the decals off the side of the #6 Dragon car 90 minutes into the day's activities; and another stoppage with an hour to go in the day after Conor Daly's #41 AJ Foyt Racing car stopped out on track and needed to be recovered.
