Detroit: Qualifying times (1)

31 May 2013

Dario Franchitti rebounded from a dismal time of it at Indianapolis to claim the pole position award after finishing top of the Firestone Fast Six for Saturday's race, the first part of the Chevrolet Indy Dual in Detroit presented by Quicken Loans.

However an engine change grid penalty held over from the Indy 500 means that despite collecting the cheque for pole position, the Ganassi driver will actually start from 11th place on the grid. That leaves Andretti Autosport's EJ Viso on de facto pole alongside Mike Conway who impressed on his first outing for Dale Coyne Racing in a qualifying held on a wet and drying 2.34-mile, 13-turn street circuit at Belle Isle.

Qualifying for Race 1 took the usual format for road and street course races in the IZOD IndyCar Series, with the field split into two groups for Round 1. The top six from each group combined to run in Round 2, and the fastest half dozen cars in that round went on to compete for pole position in the Firestone Fast Six. Qualifying for Race 2 will take place in a split half-hour session on Saturday morning and will be comprised of the best single lap pace each driver sets in their 12-minute session.

Round 1 - Group 1

A brief rain shower just before the green flag made this an official wet qualifying session on a drying track. There were no stoppages, but Charlie Kimball triggered a brief local waved yellow in turn 2 after sliding in turn 2 and making light contact with the wall. Marco Andretti blamed his rear tyre pressure being set wrongly for dropping out at the first hurdle.

Round 1 - Group 2

Although still damp, the track was already significantly drier by the time the second group went out, leading to lap times eight seconds faster than Group 1. There were no significant issues although Scott Dixon ended up brushing the wall for the second time on Friday on his final run. Graham Rahal indicated that traffic had foiled his final attempt to improve and make the cut.

Round 2 - Top 12

While virtually all the drivers started off on wet tyres, half a dozen moved to slicks after their first runs - and red-wall 'soft option' slicks at that, but found it borderline despite the clearly improving conditions. Four of them progressed (Ryan Hunter-Reay, Mike Conway, Alex Tagliani, EJ Viso) while two (Will Power and Takuma Sato) missed out after Helio Castroneves triggered the first red flag of the day when he spinning at turn 3 with three minutes remaining. Castroneves' times were deleted for interrupting the session.

Round 3 - Firestone Fast Six

Dale Coyne Racing new boy Mike Conway was first driver out as the drivers characteristically waited until almost the midpoint of the final ten minute qualifying session. Conway was ousted from provisional pole by EJ Viso and Dario Franchitti, who had been given a drive-thru penalty for a pit exit violation. That didn't affect his overall times, but a grid penalty for an unapproved engine change last week at Indianapolis will set Franchitti back ten places for the start of tomorrow's race and leaves Viso and Conway on the front row.
