Detroit: Qualifying times (2)

Mike Conway will start from pole position for the second race in the Detroit double-header on Sunday, with James Jakes alongside him on the front row.
Dale Coyne Racing's Mike Conway added a pole position for the second race of the Chevrolet Indy Dual in Detroit presented by Quicken Loans, to go along with the front row he'd already clinched for Saturday's first event in the double-header.

A late flying lap of 1:18.0977s (108.326mph) in his qualifying group put him 0.0727s ahead of the provisional pole time set by Rahal Letterman Lanigan's James Jakes in the first Race 2 qualifying session. That meant the Brit will start from pole on his first weekend with the team after being called up to replace Ana Beatriz. Jakes - who benefited from his session being red flagged early by a spinning Alex Tagliani - will start alongside him on the front row.

Qualifying for Race 2 took place on Saturday morning in place of the half hour practice session that would otherwise have been run. The field was split into two groups according to their positions in Friday's single practice with those in odd-numbered positions in one group and those in even-numbered positions in the other. The two groups each had 12 minutes of track time with at least five minutes of green track time guaranteed. Pole position went to the driver with the best overall time; the rest of his group would line up behind him in time order for the start of Race 2 in the odd-numbered grid positions and the remaining group forming up the other column in the even-numbered positions.

(Qualifying for Race 1 had taken place on Friday afternoon and followed the regular three-round format for road and street circuits (a two-group Round 1, a Top 12 Round 2 and culminating in thee Firestone Fast Six.) Dario Franchitti won pole but will start from 11th place after serving a penalty for an unapproved engine change at Indianapolis. (See separate story.)

Group 1

Group 1 got underway after a brief delay for a clean-up. The track was still drying out in sunny conditions after early morning showers, but everyone was able to run on slick tyres. Ryan Hunter-Reay slowed and pulled off track in the run-off at turn 3 mid-session with fuel pressure problems, but he was able to park behind the wall without causing a stoppage - which is more than could be said for the spin by Alex Tagliani which left the #98 stalled between turns 4 and 5 and brought out a red flag for retrieval. Tagliani's two fastest lap times were deleted for causing the premature end to the session, which left James Jakes the unlikely polesitter-presumptive, now depending whether Group 2 beat his target laptime of 1:18.1704s.

Group 2

There was less tendency to sit in pit lane during the first half of Group 2's track time, and instead everyone was out quickly in order to start setting some banker times in case the same red flag awaited this part of qualifying as befell Group 1. In fact, the 12-minute stint proceeded without incident. EJ Viso led at the halfway point with a lap of 1:18.7810s still well short of Jakes' target pole time from earlier; Will Power shaved a little off Viso's time but it was Mike Conway's late flier that handed him pole for Race 2 on Sunday.
