Texas: Race results

9 June 2013

Marco Andretti held the lead early in the race before handing off to his Andretti Autosport team mate Ryan Hunter-Reay, but traffic congestion helped Helio Castroneves take the lead shortly before the midway point of the 228-lap race after which he was never dislodged again, duly claiming the first Team Penske win of a highly unpredictable 2013 season.

Tyre management and pit strategy proved keys to the night, and as the only driver to really be able to maintain any consistency on a set of tyres over an entire 50-plus lap run Castroneves simply couldn't be touched. Hunter-Reay held on to second place and only five cars - all Chevrolet-powered - finished on the lead lap. Dario Franchitti was first Honda home in sixth place just ahead of polesitter Will Power.

The night saw only three cautions - an engine failure for Pippa Man on lap 3, a gear problem fo Scott Dixon on lap 54, and a spin for new Panther driver Oriol Servia on lap 113. With Servia able to continue after his incident, only two drivers - Mann and Dixon - failed to complete the two-hour race.
