Toronto: Practice 1 times

12 July 2013

Andretti Autosport's Ryan Hunter-Reay set the fastest time in the first practice session on the 1.755-mile, 11-turn temporary street circuit in downtown Toronto, Ontario as drivers and teams got the double-header weekend underway.

The reigning IZOD IndyCar Series champion's time of 1:00.6082s (148.494mph) was 0.0769s faster than Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing's Josef Newgarden, while Ryan Briscoe returned to duty in the #4 National Guard Panther Racing car with the third-fastest time of the 90-minute Friday morning session.

The circuit, constructed around the Exhibition Place grounds and using Lake Shore Boulevard as the backstretch, did not appear any the worse for wear for the mid-week storms that had flooded large parts of the city. The weather forecast for this weekend is for ideal racing conditions. The Saturday race will feature standing starts, and the race director for both events will be Brian Barnhart as IndyCar's president of competition Beaux Barfield is not present in Toronto.

The session was paused twice, the first time for Will Power's car stopping on course at turn 3 requiring the safety to refire the #12 Penske so that it could return to pit road; and a second red some 12 minutes before the end of practice after Dario Franchitti brushed the wall at turn 5 and the #10 Ganassi came to a stop requiring retrieval.

Qualifying for the first of the two double-header races, using the familiar three-round format for street and road courses, takes place later on Friday afternoon.
