Toronto: Qualifying times (1)

Dario Franchitti will start the first race of the Honda Indy Toronto double header from pole position after topping Friday afternoon qualifying.
Apparently rejuvenated by his first podium finish of the year last week at Pocono, Dario Franchitti was in awesome form as he swept all three rounds of qualifying for this weekend's first race of the Honda Indy Toronto double header.

"I'm just delighted for the Target crew to get the pole," said Franchitti, earned his first CART career pole at Toronto in 1997. "We've had a tough stretch and it just feels good to come back and get the pole."

He topped his first round group and then went on to pace the Top 12 round 12, before going on to set the fastest time of anyone on Friday on the 1.755-mile, 11-turn temporary street circuit in downtown Toronto. His lap of 59.6756s (105.872mph) was 0.0945s faster than that of Dragon Racing's Sebastien Bourdais, the Frenchman celebrating his first 2013 appearance in the Firestone Fast Six with a front row on the grid for tomorrow's race, which will commence with a standing start.

The practice pacesetter Ryan Hunter-Reay failed to make it into the final round of qualifying, falling just short in round 2. That meant none of the four Andretti Autosport cars made it into the pole shoot-out, in stark contrast to last week's 1-2-3 starting grid lock-out at Pocono. However, Hunter-Reay starts sixth after James Jakes took a ten-place grid penalty for an unapproved engine change.

Hunter-Reay was denied a final flying lap chance by the only major incident in qualifying which saw Takuma Sato hit the tyres in turn 1 with a minute to go in round 2 to bring out the red flags. He lost his two fastest laps as a result, and will start from 12th place on the grid

Qualifying for Race 1 took the usual format for road and street course races in the IZOD IndyCar Series, with the field split into two groups for Round 1. The top six from each group combined to run in Round 2, and the fastest half dozen cars in that round went on to compete for pole position in the Firestone Fast Six. Qualifying for Race 2 will take place in a split half-hour session on Saturday morning and will be comprised of the best single lap pace each driver sets in their 12-minute session.
