Mid-Ohio: Qualifying times

Ryan Hunter-Reay will start the Honda Indy 200 at Mid Ohio Sports Car Course from pole position, with Will Power set to start alongside him on the front row of the grid.
Reigning IZOD IndyCar Series champion Ryan Hunter-Reay claimed his third pole position of the season with a best time of 1:05.3519s (124.385mph) at the 13-turn, 2.258-mile Mid Ohio Sports Car permanent road course on Saturday afternoon.

That put the Andretti Autosport driver 0.1840s clear of second place man Will Power, and the Penske #12 will duly line up alongside Hunter-Reay on the front row of the grid for the start of Sunday afternoon's race.

Scott Dixon put in a late flier to claim third spot on the grid ahead of Hunter-Reay's team mate Marco Andretti, while the third row will be an all-Ganassi affair with Charlie Kimball pulling off his best IndyCar qualifying performance at Mid-Ohio by locking up fifth spot ahead of Dario Franchitti.

Qualifying for Race 1 took the usual IZOD IndyCar Series elimination format for road and street course races. The field was split into two groups for Round 1 according to Friday practice times; the top six from each group combined to run in Round 2, and the fastest half dozen cars in that round going on to compete for pole position in the Firestone Fast Six.

Round 1 - Group 1

All three Ganassi cars progressed from Group 1, led by Dario Franchitti at the top, with KV Racing's Simona de Silvestro an impressive fourth ahead of Justin Wilson and EJ Viso. James Hinchcliffe and Helio Castroneves were surprise early eliminations, while James Davison did well in his first IndyCar qualifying session to edge the morning practice pacesetter Josef Newgarden for ninth.

Round 1 - Group 2

Barracuda Racing/Bryan Herta Autosport's new boy Luca Filippi brought out a red flag early in the ten-minute session after running off into the tyres at turn 12. There were no further incidents in the four minutes remaining and Ryan Hunter-Reay was able to set the best time of the group ahead of Simon Pagenaud; Sebastien Bourdais missed out on making it through to round 2 as did Takuma Sato, Oriol Servia and Tony Kanaan. Filippi eventually set what would have been the fourth fastest time of the session, but his two fastest laps were deleted for causing the red flag which means he will start his IndyCar début from the back of the grid.

1. #1 Ryan Hunter-Reay Andretti (C) 123.796mph 1:05.6626s (4 laps)

Round 2 - Top 12

Round 2 proceeded without stoppages, and once again all three Ganassi cars - Dario Franchitti, Scott Dixon, Charlie Kimball - went through, although in this case they filled out the bottom positions of the top six with an all-Chevrolet line-up at the top led by Penske's Will Power and Andreti Autosport duo Marco Andretti and Ryan Hunter-Reay. Among those missing out on making it through was Simon Pagenaud, who complained of too much oversteer on his car in this run.

Round 3 - Firestone Fast Six

With most of the drivers leaving it late to come out and post their times, Dario Franchitti held early provisional pole with a time of 1:06.5854s. However, once the session got to within 90 seconds of the chequered flag the timing screens started to tumble with Ryan Hunter-Reay displacing Andretti Autosports team mate Marco Andretti from the top. Final efforts after the chequered flag saw Marco further pushed to fourth by late improvements from Will Power and Scott Dixon. Franchitti's tyres were by this stage too worn to respond and he finished slowest of all in the pole shootout, putting him alongside Charlie Kimball on the third row of the grid.

1. #1 Ryan Hunter-Reay Andretti (C) 124.385mph 1:05.3519s (5 laps)
2. #12 Will Power Penske (C) 124.036mph 1:05.5359s + 0.1840s (3 laps)
