Sonoma: Open test times

Dario Franchitti topped the times at Sonoma Raceway on Wednesday as all 25 cars entered in this weekend's race took part in a full day of testing.
Ganassi's Dario Franchitti ended up the fastest man on track at Sonoma on Wednesday at the end of five hours of open testing attended by the entire field entered in this year's GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma.

Franchitti's best time was set in the afternoon when he posted a lap of 1:18.2945s (109.663mph) on the 2.385-mile, 12-turn road course. It's a circuit he knows well, having claimed five podium finishes in California's wine country including a win in the 2009 event.

Franchitti's team mate Scott Dixon was the second fastest man on track, just 0.0749s behind the Scot. The Kiwi was a tenth of a second faster than Andretti Autosport's Ryan Hunter-Reay who was the third fastest driver on Wednesday.

In total, the top five times were all set in the afternoon session, with Hunter-Reay's team mate being the highest-placed drive rin the timesheets not to improve his time in the later session, having previously set the morning benchmark time of 1:18.9329s (108.776mph).

Ryan Briscoe was back in action in the #4 Panther Racing car and was 12th fastest on Wednesday after recovering from this fractured right wrist he sustained at Toronto last month. The man he replaced in the car, JR Hildebrand, was also back in action on Wednesday having been handed the seat of the #98 Barracuda Racing/Bryan Herta Autosport car for this weekend and who finished the day 18th fastest, admitting afterwards that he was feeling rusty after so long on the sidelines.

“As much as anything, it's just getting back out and getting a feel for things," said Hildebrand who added that he was "pumped to be back" after being out of action for three months since splitting with Panther.

“I feel like we're off to a reasonable start. The most important thing is to get up to speed on and off track," he said of how he was settling into his new surroundings at BHA. “I think for all of us, we'd like to put a result together. It would be good for me, good for the team. This about all of us getting together and doing a good job.”

James Davison was 23rd fastest after his short-notice recall to the seat of the #18 Dale Coyne Racing car, while Lucas Luhr was the slowest man on the day as he continued to settle in to the DW12 ahead of his IZOD IndyCar Series race début on Sunday.

There were no significant incidents or stoppages during the open test.
