Will Power took the lead from Scott Dixon shortly before the midway point of the second race of the Shell and Pennzoil Grand Prix of Houston doubleheader on Sunday, and refused to be dislodged again for the rest of the afternoon before claiming his second race win of 2013.

Power's win is not only a personal victory, but by pipping Dixon to the chequered flag he's given a huge helping hand to his Penske team mate Helio Castroneves. The Brazilian suffered major gearbox-related issues for the second time in 24 hours and ended up 37 laps off the pace by the finish, but Power's win means that Dixon wasn't able to maximise his advantage and to the Kiwi carries only a 25 point point lead into the season finale in two weeks time at Auto Club Speedway, Fontana, when it could have been significantly worse.

James Hinchcliffe joined Power and Dixon on the podium after pipping Justin Wilson to third place. Simon Pagenaud struggled to a seventh place finish on Sunday, which leaves him too far behind in the points to be able to contend for the title which means it's now a two-horse race between Dixon and Castroneves.

However the end of the race was overshadowed by a major crash in turn 5 which saw Dario Franchitti's car flipped up into the catchfence in a frightening high-speed accident. The three-time Indy 500 champion was removed from the wreck by the medical team and taken to a nearby Houston trauma centre with team boss Chip Ganassi optimistic that the driver was in fair shape having spoken to him briefly at the crash site.

Around 15 spectators in the grandstand were also reported to have received treatment for minor injuries sustained from flying debris that penetrated the catchfence during the accident. The other drivers involved in the accident - Takuma Sato and EJ Viso - were able to walk away from the scene without injury.
