Stars in their karts raise £14,000 for Race2Recovery

Stars race funds for Race2Recovery at Autosport International show
The Ginetta Celebrity Karting Challenge provided a great race to raise money for the Race2Recovery last Thursday at the Autosport International Show.

This year was the first time that a manufacturer had sponsored the event. Racing4Charity.com started planning for the event during a meeting in May last year in with Race Drivers Inc.

Organiser Bill Williams said: “The Ginetta Sponsorship has been incredible, it gives us a huge PR vehicle on which to promote the event which has caused us to be in the position where we are turning away professional racing drivers as we were over-subscribed. I did have to turn many drivers away the few days before the event and on the actual race-day I could have filled another three teams.”

The 21 team grid boasted established stars like David Brabham, Johnny Mowlem, Gordon Shedden, and rising talents like Alice Powell, Ed Brand and Sam Bird. Ginetta itself fielded two teams represented by its chairman Lawrence Tomlinson, Ginetta G55 Supercup Champion Adam Morgan and G50 Supercup Champion Tom Ingram. Along with the professional drivers, members of the public got to drive.

There were also demonstration laps for injured troops in specially adapted karts.

Williams added: “We are very grateful to Carolynn Hoy and Formula Kart Stars for lending us her karts and to the members of 1Royal Tank Regiment who gave up their day to bring the adapted karts over from Lincoln and then take them back.”

Team UK won the 1.5 hour race and the team members were: Alex Lynn, Will Buller, Mowlem, Ollie Webb, Jon Lancaster and member of the public Jack Monkhouse.

MotorsTV provided coverage and Wing Commander Andy Green OBE started the race which at the end raised £14,000.

Bookings are now being accepted for the 2013 event. Racing4Charity.com is currently working with John Surtees on two special charity races to raise money for the Henry Surtees Foundation. The annual Henry Surtees Trophy showcasing a field of 60 drivers is scheduled for 24 October at Buckmore. A 2.5 hour endurance race is scheduled to be held at Brooklands on 4 July. Entries are being accepted to race 2 stroke karts. Anyone interested can email Bill Williams at: bill@racing4charity.com
