Ginetta to back Formula KGP

Andy Cox: "Motorsport is about opportunities. That's the key and that's our goal."
Super 1 category Formula Kart Grand Prix announced a partnership with Ginetta yesterday.

All Formula KGP drivers will carry Ginetta logos during the course of the 2012 season. The championship has incorporated the Ginetta logo into its title: "Formula KGP in association with Ginetta."

Andy Cox of Andy Cox Racing explained to Crash.net how the partnership came about: "I have known Lawrence Tomlinson (Ginetta chairman) for quite a while. He has been aware of the Formula KGP concept since its launch. It's great that he has decided to give the class some support."

In addition to branding, Ginetta will offer drivers merchandising opportunities, factory tours and hospitality at selected events.

Cox said: "The prizes offered by Ginetta will be given at different points of the season, mainly to winners of S1 rounds or podium positions. Other prizes may be offered at some KGP club or one off races like PFI's KartMasters. I think it gives KGP drivers some extra value to what they are racing compared to other karting categories."

In partnership with Marussia F1 last year, Formula KGP offered a test in Formula Renault for the top three drivers in the championship standings and a "wildcard" driver. For the 2012 season, the drivers will have an evaluation test in the Ginetta G50.

Cox added: "Many karters never get to even drive a racing car so this program/collaboration gives them the opportunity to sample what it's like. After that, who knows? Motorsport is about opportunities, that's the key and that's our goal."

The Formula KGP announcement is another karting partnership Ginetta has secured in 2012. In January it held the Ginetta Celebrity Karting Challenge at the Autosport International Show in support of the race2recovery charity. Formula Kart Stars offered a scholarship to race in Ginetta Juniors with the Hillspeed team.

The first round of Formula KGP will be this weekend at PF International.
