Sean Babington, who was recently crowned the British Kartmasters Grand Prix Champion in the Junior Rotax class used the different age regulations to move into the Senior class for the fourth round of the Rotax Euro Challenge and promptly went on to win the main final.
On a great day for the British contingent at Belgium's Genk circuit Babington emerged ahead of an intense final battle to win the main final by less than a second from countryman James Greenway.
Going into the two point scoring finals Strawberry Racing's Mats van den Brand looked like the man to beat, the Dutchman winning all three of his qualifying heats to take pole position for the pre final.
But behind van den Brand no less than six British drivers occupied the next six places led by Lewis Plato from Babington, Ed Brand, Greenway, David Sutton and Shaun Slavin with qualifying pacesetter Karol Dabski only eighth on the intermediate classification.
However van den Brand came off worst in a four-way fight in the pre-final, crossing the line fractions behind Ed Brand, Babington and Plato after a stunning battle. That result left van den Brand on the outside row for the start of the main final, which put him at a disadvantage when the 17-lap final began.
From the outside of the from row Babington was able to maintain the pressure on poleman Ed Brand and eventually pass for the lead, taking the chequered flag less than a second ahead of Greenway with Brand completing another all British podium. Van den Brand once again finished fourth with Denmark's Kasper Jensen completing the top five.
