Kristensen named Sportsman of the Decade

6 January 2010

Multiple Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen has been named as Sportsman of the Decade on two occasions in his native Denmark.

The Audi driver, winner of the Le Mans 24 Hours no fewer than eight times, was handed the honours by TV channel TV2 as well as the daily newspaper Berlingske Tidende.

Kristensen secured the honour ahead of tennis pro Caroline Wozniacki, bicycle racer Michael Rasmussen and U.S. football star Morten Andersen amongst others.

"I'd like to thank everyone who voted for me and helped me receive these two awards," he said. "Ten years ago, I wouldn't have even dreamed of being so successful some day. But back then I had the great fortune of joining Audi. It's a big privilege to have been a member of one of the world's best race teams for as much as a decade now."

Kristensen has also been nominated as a candidate for Driver of the Decade by leading American broadcaster ESPN.

NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson, multiple Champ Car title winner Sebastien Bourdais, WRC champion Sebastien Loeb and MotoGP ace Valentino Rossi are amongst the other candidates for the award.
