JRM takes eleventh after troubled day

15 June 2012

JRM Racing will start its first Le Mans 24 Hours from eleventh on the grid following a troubled second day of qualifying at the Circuit de la Sarthe.

The team was forced to miss the first of two sessions on Thursday as it elected to change the gearbox and install the race engine into its HPD ARX-03a after the gearbox already installed in the car was damaged in Wednesday's session.

The team then gave Peter Dumbreck exclusive use of the track time available in the final session, with the Scot improving the best time set by the British squad to 3min 35.421secs – leaving it just outside the top ten on the timing sheets.

“It's been a tough day with a fair few issues but we always knew that as a rookie team in the top class it was going to be that way,” Dumbreck said. “The team acted very professionally to get through all the changes and condense the programme into the final session. It will be good to have the day's break tomorrow to fully understand the information we have and how we can make the most of the race.”

Team manager Nigel Stepney said it was a great feeling for the team to secure its place on the Le Mans grid despite the issues it faced, with the strategy of making sure all three drivers completed their mandatory laps on Wednesday being the correct one.

“It's a great feeling to qualify for our first-ever Le Mans,” he said. “This being our debut, we knew there could possibly be some hitches so we took the precaution of having all our drivers do a minimum of five laps yesterday evening. As it happens this worked out well as we lost the earlier session when we changed the gearbox and the engine.

“Although we're not 100 per cent on the set up just yet, clearly our goal has got to be getting to the end and seeing where we are at the finish.”

Live coverage of the race from the eyes of JRM Racing will be available to watch on Crash.net throughout the weekend, with an onboard feed going online shortly before the start at 15:00 local time on Saturday.
