Le Mans » Toyota names WEC driver line-up


Alex Wurz: I can't wait to get started and I am fascinated by the new challenge of competing with a hybrid car. It is the future of racing so I am very excited that Toyota comes in with this technology. I know Toyota has a lot of expertise in this area and I hope this plays to our advantage.

I don't think Toyota will win.
However, Le Mans will ban Hybrid car if Toyota win.
Rotary Engine was banned after Mazda RX7 won in 1991.
Mazda RX7 is Only Japanese Manufacture car ever win in 24 Hrs Le Mans race.
In Australia, NISSAN SKYLINE GTR32 was banned because it win every races.
RX7 & GTR32 has won a lot of motor sport fans around the world. Both cars are real Samurai of Japanese sport car.

Quite frankly Toyota deserve no success in motorsport so I hope they won't win.

They'll turn their back on this like they have on Rallying so often and F1, they deserve no successes, a souless corporate monstrocity with all the passion of two nuns playing scrabble.

@TheTruth: Peugeot, Lancia, Subaru, Mitsubishi, Audi... all left the WRC at one point or another. same goes for F1: BMW, Honda, Jaguar... the list is long. Why do you single out Toyota?

Let's not forget that ORECA was also behind the Mazda 787b success at Le Mans. Toyota probably took notice...

With this lineup they clearly didn't go for the thoroughbreds.

There are faster and more experienced guys out there. And Toyota can easily pry anyone from any team.

They went more for name recognition, since Alex Wurz and Kazuki were with Williams F1 backed by toyota. It would seem Toyota want to market them as their F1 stars coming to tackle lemans. Lapierre is there of course because he's Oreca's in-house hotshoe.

As factory squads go this doesn't seem to be a full fledged program. if it was there would at least be 2 cars and they would have at least tested a number of drivers before deciding on a final lineup.

1 Toyota hybrid against 6 proven diesels. Let's not be too optimistic. Maybe 7 diesels if Peugeot finds another privateer to run an extra car. Please get Pescarolo.

This is a "toe in he water" exercise... there is a major rule change coming in 2014 (more like the old Group C regs in spirit) and there is no point going for a full program in 2012 or 2013 really though information of other websites has Toyota doing the full WEC in 2013... PLUS Toyota is still supplying engines to Rebellion..

IMO this is the start of at least a 4 year plan to develop technology and infrastructure to have proper go along with Porsche in 2014

I don't think Pescarolo will have anything to do with Peugeot after the Le Mans debacle... according to some it was that arrangement that started his financial demise, after Peugeot demanded Pescarolo pay for the crashed car even though it was Peugeot that asked Pescarolo to run the car and there was nothing (apparently) in the contract that stipulated any such condition... but I guess Peugeot carries a big stick...

... but that could be all rumor

They demanded he pay for the crashed car??? Unbelievable rumor. I'm sure they knew going in that a crash was a possibility. Unless Henri did sign such an agreement with them.

Pescarolo had one of the best drivers in the car at the time, Benoit Treluyer. Sure he totaled it, but he was the fasted guy in the #2 car for Audi that won lemans this year.

I thought his inability to market his "Pescarolo Ecole" car before the launch of Oreca's "Formula Lemans" car is what brought about his financial troubles.

Yes, MAZDA R7 did win 1991 Le Man race. You can check on Google if you're doubt about it.
Not R32, it was GTR32. Skyline GTR32 wins consecutive years with drivers Mark Skaife/Jim Richard at Bathurst 1000, Mount Panorama Circuit in 1991 and 1992. It was first win for Mark Skaife and first debut race for GTR32 in 1991. GTR32 beat V8 and other Turbo cars. In 1993, the organizer changes the regulation because the peoples want to see local car Holden wining. So GTR32 was banned from racing at Bathurst 1000, Mount Panorama Circuit since 1993.
