McNish targets Silverstone success.

Allan McNish will hope to win on his return to racing on home soil as the Le Mans Series heads to its conclusion this weekend at Silverstone.

The final round of the 2008 season will mark the first appearance on British soil of the Audi R10 TDi and McNish and team-mate Dindo Capello will look to take the cars 20th win in a race that the team needs to win if it is to try and overhaul Peugeot in the race for the manufacturers' title – with Peugeot currently six points ahead.

While the Peugeot has been the car to beat in the LMS this season, Audi took victory at Le Mans earlier in the year and McNish said it has proven itself to be the leading diesel-powered sportscar around.

“Dindo, Tom Kristensen and I scored the Audi R10 TDI's first race victory on its début in 2006 and it went on to win the Le Mans 24 Hours the same year – the first victory for a diesel-engined car,” he said. “The R10 TDI won again at Le Mans last year while Dindo, Tom and I steered it to victory in June this year. Dindo and I won two American Le Mans Series titles in the Audi R10 TDI in 2006 & '07, and the car has already won this year's ALMS LM P1 title and so is undoubtedly the most successful diesel sportscar.”

While McNish will aid to help Audi to the manufacturers' crown, only Alex Premat and Mike Rockenfeller can take the drivers' crown for Audi – with the duo two points behind Marc Gene and Nic Minassian going into the weekend.

“The leads are not insurmountable,” Audi motorsport chief Dr Wolfgang Ullrich said. “Our competition is very fast, but a great deal can happen during a 1000-kilometre race. Let's not forget that the weather at Silverstone is often very changeable.”
