Watts inks Strakka deal

Strakka Racing has confirmed that Danny Watts will complete its driver line-up for the 2009 Le Mans Series season.

Watts will partner Peter Hardman and Nick Leventis at the wheel of the team's new Ginetta-Zytek GZ09S for the full LMS campaign and, entry permitting, into the Le Mans 24 Hours in June.

The A1 Team GBR driver will bring valuable knowledge to the team in its first season of prototype racing, having carried out plenty of running in the Ginetta-Zytek for the factory team – including a strong performance at Petit Le Mans last year.

“I'm delighted to get this deal,” he said. “I've raced the Ginetta-Zytek quite a few times, but it feels very gratifying to know I've now got a full season ahead of me.

“It's going to be tough in LMP1, up against the diesels, but I know this is a great package – reliable and easy on the Michelin tyres – and I'm confident we will be very competitive. Peter and Nick will be quick team-mates, and there's everything to play for in this season's championship.”

Team principal Hardman said he was thrilled to have Watts onboard for the season ahead and said he was sure that his experience with the car would prove vital to the team's chances of success.

“I'm delighted that Danny has agreed to do the deal and come and drive for us,” he said. “He comes with an excellent reputation, and his previous history suggests he's an exceptionally competent and talented driver. I'm confident he'll be a huge asset to the team, and his experience with the Ginetta-Zytek will be particularly valuable.”

A great loss to open-wheel racing - but we'd agree with Richard Dean's assessment that he's one of the best British drivers out there and we wish him all the best for the 2009 season.
