Senna: Le Mans could help F1 hopes

Bruno Senna has admitted that he spoke with a number of F1 team bosses before electing to sign with ORECA for the 2009 Le Mans 24 Hours, with the Brazilian keen to make sure that any driving this year helps his chances of taking an F1 seat in future.

The former GP2 racer had hoped to move into Formula One this year, but the demise of the Honda team and the subsequent re-signing of Rubens Barrichello by the new Brawn GP outfit left Senna on the outside looking in.

Since then, Senna has taken part in testing with the ORECA team at Paul Ricard and also joined Mercedes for a day of DTM testing with Mercedes at Hockenheim.

However, having consulted potential employers in the F1 paddock, Senna elected to go with the team led by Hugues de Chaunac and will partner Stephane Ortelli at La Sarthe, as well as in the LMS races in Barcelona and at Spa.

“This programme and these races are something new to me, but I view this as another step in the direction on my sole target, which is to race in Formula One as soon as possible,” he said. “I wanted to be sure about which steps to take in this tricky year with so limited F1 testing and so asked the opinion of some of those people I would like to drive for when the time comes in F1.

“The answer was clear that this is good experience to gain and that it will keep me ready should my chance come next year, next month or even next week!”
