Solid start for Quifel-ASM at Le Mans

The Quifel-ASM Team has its sights firmly focused on a podium finish after clocking the fifth best time in the LMP2 class for the Le Mans 24 Hours.

During qualification the Zytek 09 driven by Miguel Pais do Amaral, Guy Smith and Olivier Pla had looked good for a possible top three start, but Pla's best time of 3min 42.012secs ultimately ended up being good enough for fifth in class.

“We believe that we can reach the end of the race in a good position, but in the LMP2 class, the luck factor is also sometimes important in the end, Amaral said. “Olivier, Guy and I are motivated and prepared for tomorrow.

“I'm confident that the Zytek with the help of our excellent technical team, will behave itself during the race and if that happens I believe we can end the race in one of the top places.”

Former outright winner Smith admitted that the team had been battling a nervous car in the early stages of qualifying but said the Zytek was well set for the race.

"Initially the car was very nervous – I was driving with a wet set-up from the previous evening," he said. "We then changed it for the second part of the four-hour session and Olivier did a good job.

“Unfortunately he encountered traffic on his fastest lap so we should have been closer to the class pole-sitting Porsche.

“But we've got a pretty good race car after Wednesday's six-hour session and tonight's four hour time trial which should give us a shot at a class podium come Sunday afternoon.”
