Money can't buy opportunity for budding race engineers

Two weeks work experience at top international sports car team on offer at the Inside Motorsport Race Car Engineering Seminar.
One aspiring young race engineer who attends the Inside Motorsport Race Car Engineering Seminar at the Silverstone Innovation Centre on 4-8 January 2010 will be offered two weeks work experience with a leading international sports car team - and work with that team at the Silverstone 1000kms.

One of the key aims of the Inside Motorsport Race Car Engineering Seminar is to help Engineering Management and Automotive Engineering university students and post-graduates make the leap from academia to the motorsport profession ? and the fantastic opportunity to join a leading international sports car team for two weeks vocation will make that a reality.

The lucky Inside Motorsport Race Car Engineering Seminar candidate will join Strakka Racing for two weeks in September 2010, as it aims for home success with drivers Danny Watts and Nick Leventis at the Silverstone 1000kms in a state-of-the-art HPD ARX-01C.

Working closely with Strakka Racing?s technical director Piers Phillips, the candidate will play an important hands-on role within the team.

In the week leading up to the Silverstone 1000kms, he or she will work at the team?s Silverstone headquarters ? working on the LMP2 race car and preparing the race strategy. During the race weekend (10-12 September), the candidate will work in the team?s pit garage and help to engineer the car through the gruelling six hour race, getting involved in qualifying and race set-up, planning and reacting to the constantly changing race situations and working closely with the pit wall and drivers.

The work experience concludes with a detailed post-event analysis of all the chassis, engine and driver data.

?For an aspiring race engineer to be given the opportunity to work with a top international sports car team like Strakka Racing at the Silverstone 1000kms is the type of work experience money can?t buy,? said Phillips. ?Whoever joins us will become an integral part of the team and play an important role in the build up to the event, over the race weekend itself and during the post-race technical debriefs.

?It normally takes many years of working your way up the motorsport ladder to work at this level, so it will be a fantastic insight into the real life operations of a professional racing outfit for someone starting their career. I wish I?d had this type of opportunity when I was starting out.?

The Inside Motorsport Race Car Engineering Seminar is the brainchild of Dan Walmsley and Jay Davenport ? graduates of Oxford Brookes University and well respected top-level race engineers.

?Our aim is to make the Inside Motorsport Race Car Engineering Seminar as interactive and as beneficial as possible for young aspiring race engineers, and we are delighted to be able to offer someone on the course two weeks work experience at Strakka Racing,? added Walmsley. ?It?s a fantastic opportunity to gain an insight into a leading international race team, and we hope the experience gained from this will directly influence someone?s career.?
