Danny Watts admits he can't wait for the 2010 Le Mans Series season to get underway as Strakka Racing prepares for the challenge of competing in the LMP2 class.
Having campaigned an LMP1 Ginetta-Zytek last season, the British outfit moves to the second tier of the prototype classes for 2010 having purchased an Acura ARX-01 during the winter.
The move will make Strakka one of the first teams to run the car on European soil after a number of successful seasons competing in the American Le Mans Series, and Watts insisted the team was ready for the challenge.
“I can't wait to get going now and the final race of 2009 at Silverstone seems to be such a long time ago,” he said. “It's exciting to be using the Acura, which has been really successful in America and we believe it will be a strong package in LMP2 this year. We can't wait to get on track and learn about the car as it is different to the Ginetta-Zytek we ran last year. It is slower in a straight line but I imagine it will be more nimble and we can't wait to get going.
“The car is a known quantity in the States and I expect it to be quick again in Europe. The Ginetta-Zytek of Pla and Amaral will be strong again in LMP2, but having done a shakedown of the Acura in Italy, it did everything I expected.
“We want to get out to Paul Ricard for the opening eight hour race and see how we get one, but the key thing is to be reliable. The Ginetta-Zytek last year was quick, and as a team we were quick, but we lost out on reliability and had too many breakdowns. In sportscar racing with the length of the races, you have to be reliable even when you aren't quick. Last year we were quick, but we weren't reliable enough.”
Watts will again team up with Nick Leventis for the 2010 season.
