Nicolas Lapierre has denied Audi a maiden Le Mans Series pole position for the new R15 TDi by taking his Peugeot 908 HDi to the top spot at Paul Ricard.

Although most eyes were on the heavily revised, factory-supported R15, it was former GP2 race winner Lapierre who scored a comfortable pole position by half a second driving the Oreca Matmut prepared 908 HDi.

Capello, who will share his car with Allan McNish, slotted into second position, ahead of the Lola Aston Martin of Stefan Mucke, the German unable to get to within a second of the pole winning time.

The second Oreca Matmut entry of Soheil Ayari will start in fourth, while Nigel Mansell will start seventh in the Beechdean Mansell Ginetta-Zytek he will share with sons Leo and Greg.

In the LMP2 class, Danny Watts was a dominant pole winner for Strakka Racing, the Briton more than two seconds faster than the second place Quifel-ASM on Olivier Pla.

In the LMGT2 class, Gianmuria Bruni took the top spot for AF Corse Ferrari ahead of Richard Leitz in the Felbermayr Proton Porsche, while the 430GT of Giancarlo Fisichella and Jean Alesi will start fourth in class.
