Toyota stay realistic on chances

Toyota realistic about its chances with the new TS030 HYBRID
Toyota insists it is staying realistic about what it will achieve this season when its new hybrid car debuts in the World Endurance Championship and at Le Mans.

The manufacturer revealed the TS030 at Paul Ricard, while also confirming it will field two cars at Le Mans in June.

Toyota's decision to return to top level sportscar competition comes at a welcome time following Peugeot's decision to halt its own programme with the 908, but team president Yoshiaki Kinoshita played down any talk that Toyota was ready to take Peugeot's place in challenging Audi for honours.

Instead, he insisted the initial aim was to develop and showcase the hybrid technology in place on the TS030 before hoping to fight for victory.

“Of course we would love to win Le Mans; that is the dream for all competitors in this race,” he said. “But we are realistic and we know we need to develop and to learn in order to compete with some very strong competition. Our target this year is to show the performance level of our car and particularly the THS-R powertrain.

“Hybrid is a core technology of TOYOTA so it is important to demonstrate this in a motorsport arena and we want to prove it can bring a performance advantage, both in terms of lap time and fuel efficiency. Everyone involved in designing, developing and preparing the car - both at TMG and at Motor Sport Division in Japan - has worked incredibly hard to reach this point and we are all very excited to be back on the race track again.”

Alex Wurz, Nicolas Lapierre and Kazuki Nakajima will share one of the Toyotas at Le Mans.
