Former Italian international footballer Alessandro Del Piero has joined forces with American actor Patrick Dempsey for an assault on the 2013 Le Mans 24 Hours.
The former Juventus star, now plying his trade in Australia with Sydney FC, has entered into partnership with Dempsey and his Dempsey Racing team for the new outfit – which will run under the Dempsey/Del Piero Racing name.
The team has lodged an entry with the ACO to run at Le Mans in June and will also run a two-car effort in the American Le Mans Series.
As yet, there have been no comments on what car the team will use during the season ahead.
“We are excited to join forces with Alessandro and compete at the highest levels of racing,” Dempsey said. “Alessandro's passion for winning and leadership skills will be invaluable, and he will play an important role in the development and direction of the team.”
Del Piero himself said motorsport had always been a passion and admitted his delight at getting involved with the programme.
“I have had a passion for motorsport since I was a young boy growing up in Italy,” the 38-year-old said “I am thrilled at the opportunity to team with Patrick. We expect to compete at a very high level and our central focus will be on winning championships.”
Dempsey, Joe Foster and Michael Avenatti have been listed as the three drivers for the Le Mans bid.
