Hour 8: Audi still leads, but Kristensen is on his own

The hour opened with the #1 Audi R18 e-tron quattro still stuck in the team garage having a crank shaft sensor repaired - a process that involved lifting the entire engine up out of the bodywork in order to access the faulty part.

With the #3 Audi having been hit by a puncture in the Dunlop chicane it meant that the lead over the two Toyota TS030 hybrids had fallen to the team's #2 car, with Tom Kristensen taking over driving duties from Loïc Duval as the race entered its eighth hour as the clock ticked past 10pm local time - meaning that it was now properly dark over the Circuit de la Sarth.

The #1 finally got back underway just before the half hour, now 12 laps behind and down in 24th place overall, with Marcel Fässler installed at the wheel now with a mountain to climb.

There were problems for a former leader of the LMP2 class as well, with the #26 G-Drive Racing Oreca 03-Nissan losing several places with a forced eight-minute pit stop to repair the mandatory left hand illuminated number panel on the car. That left Bertrand Baguette top of the class in the #35 OAK Racing Morgan-Nissan ahead of Simon Dolan in the #38 Jota Sport Zytek-Nissan.

In the GTE-Pro category it was still Bruno Senna in the #99 Aston Martin Vantage V8 ahead of Richard Lietz in the #92 Porsche 911 RSR, while Darryl O'Young was on point in the GTE-Am class in the #55 AF Corse Ferrari 458 Italia ahead of the rapidly closing Paolo Ruberti in the #88 Proton Competition Porsche 911 GT3 RSR.

Ten minutes before the top of the hour, the fourth safety car of the race was deployed, this time after the #25 Delta-ADR ORECA-Nissan went into the barrier at the entry to the Porsche Curves sending a lot of gravel, dirt and debris out onto the track, driver Tor Graves in his second mishap of the day.

Tom Kristensen had pit just before the yellows came out, but for other drivers it was a well-timed chance to come in for service.
