McNish: Only puncture prevented perfection

One minor hiccup wasn't enough to ruin the gameplan of the #2 Audi as it cruised to victory in the 90th Le Mans 24 Hours.

Allan McNish has paid tribute to the Audi teams that both built and maintained the Le Mans-winning #2 e-tron quattro after claiming a third success in the endurance classic at the weekend.

The Scot partnered regular team-mate Tom Kristensen and newcomer to the #2 car Loic Duval to a one-lap margin of victory over the best of the Toyota opposition, helped by near-perfect reliability on the German LMP1 hybrid.

While both the #1 and #3 sister cars hit trouble, and the second Toyota was denied a shot at the podium by a late accident in tricky weather conditions, the #2 Audi hardly missed a beat in 24 hours and, having started from pole position, not only gave Duval his first taste of success at La Sarthe, but also completed McNish's hat-trick and extended Kristensen's legacy to nine wins.

“The 2013-specification Audi R18 e-tron quattro is simply very, very good,” the Scot enthused, “The engineers did a perfect job in the winter, we were here on the test day and Loic's lap time and the confidence that Tom Kristensen and I had in the car gave us a good feeling.

“Our pace was right this year and that's why, for us, it was about being careful and driving a clean race throughout – without additional pit-stops. We had strong competition in the form of our sister car and Toyota but, except for a puncture on Tom's stint, our run was perfect for 24 hours straight. There aren't too many races like that at Le Mans.”

For Duval, who moved over from the #3 car that he took to fifth place with Timo Bernhard and Romain Dumas in 2012, it was a first chance to sample to top step of the Le Mans podium.

“This is my first Le Mans victory – a really great moment in my career!” he admitted, “Since last year, the whole team has been giving everything and prepared an outstanding car for us. Le Mans is a great race that evokes so many emotions and is so tiring. Now I've really got to restrain myself to keep from shedding tears...”
