The #7 Toyota being driven by Kazuki Nakajima retained its lead with a third of the 2014 Le Mans 24 Hours completed as darkness fell over the circuit.

Nakajima is almost two minutes clear of the #2 Audi being driven by Marcel Fassler, with late replacement Marc Gene closing slightly on his team-mate in the #1 Audi. They are the only three cars on the lead lap after eight hours of the race, with Mark Webber dropping two laps down following a safety car period during the seventh hour.

The #12 Rebellion Racing car is fifth at present but being closed down by Romain Dumas in the #14 Porsche with both cars running six laps off the lead.

The recovering #8 Toyota had climbed as high as seventh ahead of the LMP2 battle thanks to some quick laps from Anthony Davidson but a slow puncture forced two pit stops in close succession and Nicolas Lapierre took over the car around 2230 local time as the track fell in to darkness.

A close battle at the head of the GTE PRO class continued with Darren Turner in the #97 Aston Martin took the lead from Giancarlo Fisichella in the #51 Ferrari by diving down the inside in to the first chicane, while GTE AM leader Paul Dalla Lana in the #98 Aston Martin had an off at Arnage to lose a chunk of his lead.

Webber pits for more fuel in the #20 Porsche and he's passed by two cars as he rejoins on cold tyres

And in GTE AM the class-leading #98 Aston being driven by Dalla Lana has gone off at Arnage. Doesn't look to have sustained damage but he's lost a chunk of time there with Thiim in the #95 Aston within a lap

Problems for the #73 Corvette in the pits and Magnussen takes over but is now a lap down on the GTE PRO leaders

Looks like Davidson had a slow puncture in the #8 Toyota and he pits early again to hand over to Lapierre

Gene doing an impressive job as he is lapping a second per lap quicker than Fassler ahead in the other remaining Audi. They're both chasing Nakajima, but having two cars within a lap of the lead is a decent position for Audi strategically to attack the only Toyota in the picture for now

Darkness has fallen over the circuit now and the headlights are taking full effect - a wall of light heading down the Mulsanne when viewed from head on

Dumas in the #14 Porsche complaining of braking issues, while Davidson pits the #8 Toyota and drops behind Mardenborough in the #35 Ligier again

That's timing - Nakajima doesn't open up a bigger lead as he pits too. The top three cars - #7 Toyota, #2 Audi and #1 Audi - all have made nine stops now. Just eight for Webber in fourth

Nakajima's lead is creeping up towards two minutes again and is about to become much bigger as Fassler pits the #2 Audi from second place

Davidson now has moved up to seventh overall in the #8 Toyota ahead of Mardenborough who leads the LMP2 class by 45s in the #35 Oak Racing Ligier

Turner and Fisichella scrapping over the lead of the GTE PRO class and it's Turner in the #97 Aston who retakes the place

A quick mention of the GTE AM class, where Astons run one and two with Dalla Lana in the #98 car leading Thiim in the #95

Dumas in the #14 Porsche is now around a minute behind the #12 Rebellion in the battle for fifth overall. Davidson is about to become the car behind them in the #8 Toyota but three laps adrift

After that impressive lap, Gene brings Audi #1 in to the pits from third place. He should be able to hold station though, with Webber the best part of a lap down

Gene with a 3m24s lap - he's the fastest man on track now and two seconds faster than the leading two

Davidson doing a good job of hauling the #8 Toyota back up in to the top ten as he now runs ninth with just two LMP2 cars ahead of him, both within 40 seconds. He should get both in the next five laps

Webber brings the #20 Porsche in from fourth place for fuel, getting held up by the #91 Porsche 911 in the process as he has to wait to dive in to the pits

In LMP2, Mardenborough has just completed the #35 Ligier's fastest lap of the race and that sees him move above the #36 Alpine and in to the lead as Webb pits the Signatech Alpine
