Poulsen dedicates win to Simonsen

16 June 2014

Kristian Poulsen has dedicated the #95 Aston Martin's victory in the GTE AM class to has former team-mate Allan Simonsen.

Simonsen was killed in a crash while driving the #95 car at the start of the 2013 race a year ago, with Poulsen and Christoffer Nygaard sharing the car with Simonsen a year ago. The #95 Young Driver Aston was driven to victory by Poulsen, Nicki Thiim and David Heinemeier Hansson this year and Poulsen revealed he had almost not raced having been worried about returning to Le Mans.

“It has been a tough week for all of us in Aston Martin and all the guys who knew Allan, it's basically me and Christoffer as well who drove with him last year when the accident happened,” Poulsen said. “I wasn't sure if I would come back again and if I have to be honest the first couple of laps I thought it was a bad idea. But then you've got to get on with it and we all know this is in the spirit of Allan.

“This victory goes to Allan right now and the whole team will never forget him. He was a really nice guy.”

Young Driver Team Owner Jan Struve said it was a case of completing the job that the team had set out to do 12 months ago.

“We have achieved what we were aiming for last year but didn't succeed,” Struve said. “We have now fulfilled it and we know that Allan has been cheering for us and smiling down on us and, of course, he has been in our thoughts. This win is extremely important to us and I'm proud of all of the team and drivers. They are all Le Mans winners.”
