Porsche has held on to its lead of the 2015 Le Mans 24 Hours but the number 9 Audi is breathing down its neck at the end of the fifth hour after destroying the race lap record.
Filip Albuquerque smashed the previous lap record by well over a second with a 3m 17.647s as he hunted down Brendon Hartley in the #17 Porsche 919 Hybrid. However, in the dirtier air behind the Porsche the Audi began to struggle and opted to pit to gain clearer air.
After his earlier heart-in-mouth moment Benoit Treluyer has begun to recover with the #7 Audi R18 e-tron quattro in third place ahead of the chasing Porsches.
In the LMP2 category the Oreca 05 Nissan machines demonstrated its strength as KCMG pulled out a 40-second led on Thiriet By Tds Racing, with both teams running in similar machinery.
The GTE Pro class saw some fair but fierce fighting between the #64 Corvette Racing and #99 Aston Martin, with the pair trading passes, while in the GTE AM class the number 72 SMP Racing's is starting to pull out a healthy lead on the competition.
