Hoy not focusing on result at Le Mans debut

Le Mans debutant and NISMO protege Sir Chris Hoy says he is concentrating 'trying to do the best job I can' as he rejoins the Algarve Pro Racing team in France.

Sir Chris Hoy says he is not going to let thoughts of potential outcomes distract him from the job at hand as he prepares to make his Le Mans 24 Hours debut with Nissan and Algarve Pro Racing.

The former Olympic cycling legend completed a successful day behind the wheel at the annual Le Mans Test Day over the weekend, and is now looking forward to returning to the Circuit de la Sarthe alongside team-mates Andrea Pizzitola and Mike Munemann.

The 2015 European Le Mans Series LMP3 class champion completed 30 laps around the long Le Mans circuit as he prepares to become the first-ever summer Olympic medallist to compete in the classic French endurance race and was delighted to get better acquainted with his Ligier-Nissan LMP2 around the legendary layout.

"The car didn't miss a beat," Hoy said, "The track was pretty green and slippery early in the session but, even so, I was really pleased with my lap times and was able to chip away and get quicker and quicker.

“It is great to get back on this track - it is such an amazing circuit – and I'm looking forward to the race weekend, I'm really not focused on the results. I'm just trying to do the best job I can. Whenever I'm in the car, I'm driving to the absolute limit of my abilities – not beyond it – and trying to finish the race. It is such a challenge to just survive the race. I'm really not thinking beyond just trying to do my job. As soon as you start thinking about winning or getting on the podium, it just distracts you from what you are trying to do."

Having retired from cycling and focused instead on his 'behind the wheel hobby', Hoy has progressed through the intensive driver development programme created to turn graduates from Nissan's successful GT Academy 'gamer to racer' initiative into professional drivers. He made his Nissan debut in the 2014 British GT Championship driving a GT-R NISMO GT3, before becoming LMP3 champion on the back of victories in three of the first four races with Team LNT's Nissan-powered Ginetta, alongside co-driver Charlie Robertson. His latest adventure begins in earnest with scrutineering on Monday 13 June before the Algarve Pro Racing entry hits the track for the first time on Wednesday (15 June).
