Le Mans 24 Hours: Jani hails Porsche pole but hopes for luck in race

Neel Jani feels he was able to make the best of the tricky conditions and traffic to grab pole position for Le Mans 24 Hours but would prefer a large slice of luck during the race compared to 12 months ago.

The #2 Porsche 919 Hybrid driver also put his car on pole at Le Mans last year only to suffer a series of technical gremlins which saw his team drop down the order while its sister cars claimed a historic one-two.

Jani's second straight pole, and Porsche's 18th in its history at Le Mans, heads another front row lockout for the manufacturer but he says he's willing to trade qualifying for good fortune in the race.

“Last year the pole lap was a real banger, this year it was different circumstances,” Jani said. “It was so difficult in traffic yesterday, but obviously I was the one who lost the least. It was all about working around people.

“Today's conditions were very poor with all the water and dirt on the track. However, I'll be the start driver and I'm very much looking forward to it.

“Last year I started from pole as well, but then we were the unluckiest of the Porsches. The team did everything in every detail to prepare for 2016 and I hope for some more luck this year.”
