There is one rule in every track racing which is the same - when a car is overtaked with a lap, it must give enough room for the faster car to overtake it painlessly without the driver of the slower car to do anything stupid. Le Mans is special case where drivers make thousands of overtakes for the entire race. I can imagine here for faster drivers, slower cars are like barrels - they are there and it is suppose to stay there without move when you pass by them. You can't wait every single car to move to other side of the track signalling you that can be passed, this would kill the whole race, it would look like we are watching hihgway traffic from police cameras... and even there accidents happen.
