The controversial X-wings, which have begun sprouting on an increasing
number of cars this season, have finally been banned by the FIA.



Despite an original request from Max Mosley for the teams to remove the
wings being turned down, the FIA has now banned the devices on safety
grounds. The rule concerning areas of the car in which such wings may be
used has been revised with immediate effect, preventing many teams trying
them at Monaco next month.



The FIA banned the wings on four grounds, including the fear of injury or
death should they become detached in an accident. Although the majority of
teams were opposed to a ban, the drivers have apparently come out in
support of it.
